A Look at Addiction in America

Amid reports that Tiger Woods has entered a rehab center for sex addiction, we revisit a conversation with Benoit Denizet-Lewis, a journalist and recovering sex addict. In his book, “America Anonymous: Eight Addicts in Search of a Life,” now out in paperback, he followed eight people who are addicted to everything from cocaine to food. We also hear from Jody Pegram, executive director of A Sober Way Home in Prescott, Arizona, and one of the addicts in Denizet-Lewis’ book.

Maine’s Thomas College Guarantees Students Will Find Jobs

A recent poll from the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that nearly two-thirds of college seniors are worried about finding a job. Thomas College in Waterville, Maine is trying to help students land that first job. The liberal arts school guarantees a job to students who are able to keep a certain GPA, among other requirements, within six months of graduating or else they can come back to Thomas and take classes for free or have the college pay their student loans for a year. We speak with Thomas Edwards, provost for Thomas College.

Banks in Haiti Slowly Reopen and Process Money Transfers

Haitian-Americans are used to sending money to relatives in Haiti, but the earthquake made that almost impossible over the last week. One-third of Haitians receive cash from overseas. Banks and money transfer agencies are now slowly re-opening so that survivors can receive much-needed cash. We speak with Haitian-Americans in Boston trying to send money to relatives in the earthquake zone and with Jean-Marc Piquion, a vice president at Unitransfer, a money transfer agency that is part of Haiti’s largest commercial bank.

Celebrating Guitarist Django Reinhardt

This coming Saturday marks the centennial of the birth of the late jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The renowned musician recorded with Stephane Grappelli, Coleman Hawkins and Louis Armstrong and was known for his dazzling flourishes on the guitar despite having suffered an accident which left him with the use of only two fingers on his left hand. We talk about the man and his music with Robert Saunders and Jack Soref of the group Sinti Rhythm, who will be playing at the Alliance Francaise of Boston’s anniversary event.
