Small loans were once hailed as the key to raising living standards for poor people in places like Bangladesh, but new studies show that micro loans don’t really raise incomes. But then, why are over a hundred and fifty million people across the world still looking for micro loans? We’ll speak with Jonathan Morduch, professor of public policy and economics at NYU, and a co-author of “Portfolios of the Poor: How the World’s Poor Live on $ 2 a Day.” He’s also co-director of the Financial Access Initiative, a consortium aimed at bringing financial services to poor people.

Dr. Lytle Adams was a dentist from Pennsylvania who had an unusual idea for attacking the Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Adams thought that bats could be enlisted to carry tiny bombs that would detonate in Japan; the idea, according to Nate DiMeo, made it all the way to the White House. DiMeo is producer of The Memory Palace.
