Health Care Reform Passes Procedural Vote in the Senate

Listen
Senate Democrats who cobbled together the 60 votes needed to pass their health care reform proposal at 1 a.m. this morning are preparing for a possible late-Christmas Eve final vote on the bill. Searching for Balance in Religion

Listen
Frank Schaeffer has spent his life thinking about religion – he’s the son of leading evangelicals and he was a Christian fundamentalist himself for some time. He is no longer an evangelical, and in his new book, he finds fault not only with them, but also with a group of outspoken atheists; Schaeffer sees both groups as dogmatic.

Feliz Navidad in Barcelona

Listen
The Mayor of Barcelona is getting some unusual Christmas cards this year. The cards feature photos of the city’s red light district and they are coming from residents who are fed up with conditions there. The BBC’s Sarah Rainsford reports.

The Trial Of Major Hasan

Listen
How does the military try someone for murder? We’ll look at how the military will try Major Nidal Hasan, the alleged Fort Hood shooter charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder. He’ll face a jury, but it won’t be a jury of peers — they’ll be officers of higher rank than Hasan. And they’ll get to ask questions. Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice and professor of military law at Yale University joins us to bring us up to date on the proceedings and explain the difference between military and civilian trials.

Listener comments
  • Your interview with Frank Schaeffer was very poor in my opinion. You didn’t challenge his mischaracterisations of Richard Dawkins or atheism. The reasoning he used to find his way to a “middle way” was very muddled. But instead of challenging him Robin egged him on. Please allow Dawkins or someone else to respond to this interview.

  • I have heard Mr. Schaeffer interviewed elsewhere and have a deep respect for him. Having once been quite religious myself, I sort of understand what he trying to say when he compares atheism to fundamentalist Christianity. They both seem to be unbending in their view of the other and take delight in degrading the other as well. To me, there is no mis-characterization of Mr. Dawkins at all. If Mr. Schaeffer can hear the same tone from him that he heard from others that he grew up with, isn’t possible he might be correct? It’s the tone Mr Schaeffer is comparing, not the words. If I need a rebuttal from Mr. Dawkins, all I have to do is go to his web site.

  • Hi there.. if I may, Marc, I wanted to gently add,
I did immediately present the view of Dawkins and others that they have to be strident because they feel religion has been kept from criticism, and put in the public arena.

I do appreciate your weighing in, we are happy to consider having Dawkins on.

  • I can relate to what frank is saying. I think their are a lot of people who can’t relate to todays religions, but need someone who is saying what I believe to be the truth
