Pluto Planetary Kerfuffle
Listen
We revisit a conversation with Neil deGrasse Tyson. As the Frederick P. Rose director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City, Tyson was at the center of the storm in 2001 when it was discovered that the planetarium had classified Pluto as an “icy object” instead of as a planet. Tyson was immediately labeled a Pluto hater and received a flood of critical letters and emails. His memories of that time, as well as a wealth of Pluto-related songs, cartoons, correspondence and facts are collected in the book “The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet” which has just been released in paperback.

My math may be faulty, and I am sure Goldman Saks will find fault with my reasoning, but wouldn’t 23 billion provide 575 thousand $40,000 a year jobs?

Please, please do not refer to the North American species of the genus Rangifer as reindeer. North American members of that genus have always been called caribou. It hurts the ears to hear them called reindeer, which are the domesticated members of the genus found in Eurasia. Also, I am not a global warming skeptic, but I understand that artic species often have complex population dynamics with cycles of high and then low numbers in the population. This can be especially true in smaller geographic population groups. So to simply state that a decline in a population of this species is due totally to global warming makes me wonder if an issue of much complexity is being over simplified, and not dealt with in its true complexity. Also, the actual range of these caribou was never explained.
