This was nothing but a defacto commercial for Starbucks peppered with a bit of pretentious rhetoric about national identity. THis is "independent' public radio? IN addition I question the assertion made, that Starbucks promotes 'our values' .I fi i remeber correctly they have been known to muscle out local businesses as they expand throughout the US. Imperialists in bell bottoms. This story is not to H&N's credit.

Are Starbucks consumers dupes? Of course they are. Bryant Simon avoids explicitly labeling them such because you don't insult the dupes you want to buy your book. Marketing starts from the premise that you can herd dupes into buying something they don't know they need even if they don't really need it. If you want evidence Starbucks customers are dupes, remember in the report the folks being interviewed about the decline of Starbucks' decline were on line at Starbucks. Dupes.
