Understanding the Wicked Witch and Cowardly Lion

Listen
Remember the Wicked Witch of the West from L. Frank Baum’s classic Wizard of Oz? With her angry cackle, green complexion and flying monkeys, Gregory Maguire wanted to know how she became that way. In the first two books of his adult series, we learn that she grew up facing discrimination because of her green complexion, but was also a passionate animal rights advocate. In his most recent book,”A Lion Among Men” we hear about a lion she freed from captivity. “A Lion Among Men” is out in paperback this week; we revisit our conversation with Gregory Maguire from when the book first came out.
