President Obama’s chief economic adviser, Lawrence Summers, was warned about the dangers of investing in complex financial instruments when he was president of Harvard. An employee came to him, concerned that Harvard’s endowment was taking too many risks. The employee was fired shortly thereafter. In semi-arid Colorado, some residents collect rainwater in barrels for irrigating gardens or lawns even though it is illegal. Colorado law stipulates that rainwater should flow freely into the ground and streams because it’s owned by the state and the people who pay for water rights. We speak with Frank Jaeger, district manager at the Parker Water and Sanitation District in Parker, Colorado. We also hear from Harold Smethills, a developer who’s looking to build more than 10,000 homes in Southwest Denver that would use rainwater for landscaping.

He joins us in the studio, along with Jody Adams, owner and chef at the restaurant Rialto in Boston. They are among the participants in a poetry reading in Cambridge Tuesday night.

You may, or may not be aware of this, but horses are also vaccinated for rabies. Although, there are few reports of horses contracting rabies (one in Kentucky in February of this year), many horses owners vaccinate as a precaution to protect their animals. The vaccine is inexpensive compared to the loss of an animal. The saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is more than true in the case of this deadly, always fatal disease.
