China’s Gender Gap

Listen
A recent study published by the British Medical Journal shows that for every 100 girls born in China, 119 boys are born. A combination of China’s family planning policy, also known as the “one-child” policy, and an ingrained cultural preference for sons has contributed to the gender gap, which could have dire social consequences for Chinese society. We speak to the study’s co-author Dr. Therese Hesketh of University College London and Zhejiang University in China.

  • I’m disappointed; I clicked on the “China Gender Gap” link and it played the “Movies that Changed my Life” segment — and there’s no audio link for the “movie” segment, so I don’t know where to go to get the China story.

  • Aha! I found it – China plays when you click the “Boeing” link . . . . is it April fools day?

  • It was astonishing that the person giving advice about “Severance” suggested that it’s good to persuade a company that’s laying someone off to keep them on the roles long enough for the person to obtain refinancing on their house based on the job they used to have. It was even more astonishing that the person doing the interviewing didn’t ask if that isn’t exactly the sort of fraud that has caused so much of our economic crisis. Another example of uncritical journalism.

  • Ms. Young,

I enjoy listening to your show on KSFR in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thank you very much for your great work.

I have a comment regarding the show aired on Apr 27, 2009, where you interview a career coach. The segment was excellent, in my view. I request that you listen to the exchange about representing to a bank or other lender that you are gainfully employed when, in fact, you are not earning income. Lying is not a good thing, wouldn’t you agree?

    Thank you,
    Michael Jacobs
