President Obama says CIA agents who used harsh interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists while under specific orders of the Bush administration will not be prosecuted. The statement was in response to four previously classified government memos released yesterday, which outline in detail the methods of interrogation used by CIA operatives at the agency’s so-called “black sites” in the years after 9-11, methods which have since been outlawed. Mark Mazzetti, national security correspondent for the New York Times, is our guest.
Afghanistan

This week 300 women in Kabul were stoned as they tried to protest a new marriage law that they claim legalizes marital rape; the Taliban also executed a young couple trying to elope. Women’s rights in Afghanistan and more with Sarah Chayes, former NPR reporter. Chayes now runs the Arghand Cooperative in Kandahar; we also speak with James Roseli, a U.S. Foreign Service officer who is a member of a provincial reconstruction team in the central Afghan town of Chaghcharan.
Booze Bus

Binge drinking is so bad in London that the ambulance service is running a special bus to pick up alcohol casualties. The booze bus can carry 20 patients at a time and it runs every weekend. The BBC’s Anna Holligan spent a night out in London and prepared a report.
Running Barefoot?

Yes there will be barefoot runners in Monday’s Boston Marathon. Matt Fuxan is running his first barefoot marathon, while Rick Roeber is a veteran. This will be his 43rd barefoot marathon. Rick Roeber’s Boston Marathon bib number is 14454, Matt Fuxan’s is 5443.

Roy Haynes will be honored this weekend at Harvard University where he is a Master-in-Residence this year. Haynes has played with such jazz greats as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Chick Corea. Billboard calls him “one of the seven wonders of modern jazz.”

Oh! We thought we had a pretty good show today. But you can’t please everyone. So, to your comments:
Regarding the barefoot runner. I’ve never met him.
I will be hosting him and his family as a favor to a friend (we do alot of that around Marathon time here in Boston) and that fact was disclosed in passing because we have a strict policy that if any story comes even indirectly from a personal connection, we mention it. I think it’s a good policy. And I thought he was a find!
As to your criticism of the second barefoot runner, I respectfully disagree. His brief reference to his faith was not only not gratuitous, it was the whole reason he runs Marathons! But even if it didn’t play such a role I’d never stop him from saying it. Why, that would be censorship!
Which brings us to your last comment. We’re scratching our heads over this one. The only thing you’ve ever written us (we keep a data base) is right there on the comments page for everyone to see. We do reserve the right to remove comments we judge offensive, but yours is right there. Perhaps I’m missing something?
To everyone else, please, if you missed it check out the Roy Haynes piece. He’s an uplifting jewel.
