Water Woes

Listen
California is under a water emergency thanks to a
three-year drought. Farmers are being warned that their ability to
irrigate might be cut off and Los Angeles is going to limit outdoor
watering to just two days a week. We speak with Mindy Luber,
president of Ceres.

Republican Feud

Listen
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael
Steele is backing away from criticizing powerful conservative talk
radio host Rush Limbaugh. This comes as Democrats are trying to label Limbaugh as the true head of the opposition. We speak with Mike Allen, chief political correspondent for Politico and Vin Weber, GOP lobbyist and political consultant.

The High Cost of Corrections

Listen
Michael Thompson of the Justice Center at the Council of State Governments comments on the challenges many states face as the cost of corrections continues to climb and revenues shrink.

Changing Lives Through Literature

Listen
Can John Steinbeck or Toni Morrison steer someone away from crime and keep them out of jail? That’s the premise behind “Changing Lives Through Literature,” a program that offers some convicted felons a chance to attend mandatory seminars to discuss fiction, memoirs and poetry, as a condition of their probation. Our guest is Jean Trounstine, Professor of Humanities at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Remember Handwriting? It’s Still Important

Listen
Handwriting doesn’t have to be beautiful, but it should at least be
legible. That’s the argument our guest Kitty Burns Florey makes in
her new book, “Script and Scribble: The Rise and Fall of
Handwriting.” She says handwriting is still a crucial skill that
helps children’s cognitive development.

Listener comments
  • Great show today – I was wondering about the last song that was played as you guys signed off. It sounded amazing and I’d love to know who performed the song. I looked around the website but couldn’t find a place where it might have been listed. Thanks a ton.

  • Ms Young & Co.,
Great show thanx. Living in the ARID West,
drought is not a surpise & shouldn’t be, especially with global ‘heating’. Calif. is not alone. Other states’ won’t anticipate or
live within their means.Idaho is certainly one. Malthus was right. Growth & consumption
limitations would be rational, especially if
done proactively. The monster Westside Calif. water diversion is a story of diverse
perversion on many fronts. Let me assure you
it was done by BIG GOVERNMENT at public
    expense, advantaging some, disadvantaging
    many. CL

  • [...] – get this – how companies need to be concerned not only with their carbon footprint, but their water footprint. The gist is that it ends up taking 9 zillion gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of soda, and we [...]
