For some communities, foreclosures and empty storefronts are a sign of a sour economy. For New Castle, Indiana, it’s yellow freight cars — nearly a hundred of them. Bruce Atkinson grew up in New Castle and works nearby, he’s trying to figure out how to clear them out of town; we also speak with Spencer Wendelin, an executive with C & NC Railroad. C & NC owns the tracks.

Idle Freight Cars in Kentucky

After we aired this story, listener Amy Carroll wrote us about abandoned freight cars her husband photographed in Kentucky:

Robin,

I really enjoyed your story about the idle freight cars in New Castle, IN. My husband and I traveled to my hometown in rural KY over the holidays and saw the same phenomenon. Attached are some photos tat my husband took. These train cars did not bisect a town like the cars in your story but it was a very obvious and very sad reminder of what’s been going on with the economy. However, they were also kind
of beautiful, tracing the lines of the rolling hills that I love. My father tells me that there are about seven miles of train cars in the area surrounding my town.

Hope you enjoy the photos and thanks for your show.

Thanks,
Amy and Bob Carroll
