Obama’s Economy Speech

President-elect Barack Obama speaks about the economy and a recovery plan. Robert Samuelson, economic columnist for the Newsweek Magazine and the Washington Post, joins us. We also speak with Darryl Buchanan, City Administrator in Flint, Michigan, a community which was previously dominated by the auto industry and whose budget is now bleeding red ink. As for retiree spending, we turn to Stuart Altman, Professor of National Health Policy at Brandeis University. Altman has advised the Nixon, Carter, and Clinton Administrations, and helped craft candidate Obama’s Health Policy.

Lessons from Gaza

Boston University Professor Andrew Bacevich says President-elect Obama must grasp the essential lessons of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or the United State’s own chronicle of incursions and invasions will continue. Bacevich writes about this in today’s Boston Globe and joins us to talk about it. His latest book is “The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism.

Same-sex Adoption

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in Arkansas challenging a new state law that effectively bars gays and lesbians from adopting. A handful of other states have similar laws. We talk with Adam Pertman, Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, about how these restrictions affect children in foster care. We also hear from Jerry Cox of the Arkansas Family Council and Dennis Patrick, who has adopted four sons with his partner.

Consumer Electronics

We visit the 42nd International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The CES, as it’s known, helps determine what hi-tech gizmos and gadgets you’ll soon see on store shelves. Companies are unveiling HD screens as thin as paper and laptops so small they barely cover your lap, hoping to wow the media and eventually, you. Our guest is technology reporter, Jeff Cutler.

Lima, Ohio

We correct our pronunciation of the town where one of our new stations is located. It’s Lima, Ohio, and it’s pronounced with a long “I,” like the bean — not the city in Peru. Patricia Smith, director of the Allen County Museum in Lima tells us why.
