Penelope Leach on Daycare

Child Care Today (Amazon.com)

Child Care Today (Amazon.com)

If you’re a parent, chances are you have a dog-eared copy in your home of Penelope Leach’s groundbreaking book “Your Baby and Child.” Leach has influenced generations of parents with her child-centered philosophy since originally publishing her landmark book in 1978. Now she is tackling daycare. Back in the 90’s, she came out with a book saying daycare was harmful to children, setting off a storm of controversy. Now Leach is out with a new book where she revisits the issue and revises her controversial opinion. The book is called “Child Care Today: Getting It Right for Everyone,”and Penelope Leach joins us to discuss her new findings.

  • Hello Robin
Of course Penelope is right. Nothing and no program as well advanced that it might be, cannot replace the love and care of a mother and her child; and no love could be more pure as stronger as is the one between the two. Parents, teachers, and community members all know that. But our way of life is pushing us out our right path, not because we don’t know, but becase of false socio econimc and cutural realities we are being fed. How can we send our children to child care and then go to work? What could they possibly learn that is better in quality and care for themselve and for the community, than what the parent can provide them with at home?
