What’s Going on in Congress

The Senate passed an energy bill that substantially increases fuel economy standards for the first time since 1975, but battles remain over immigration and funding for stem cell research. We sort it out with Gail Chaddock, Congressional Correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor.

Soaring With Fidel

Listen
Author David Gessner goes on a pilgrimage to track the elusive osprey from Cape Cod to Cuba. His obsession is documented in his book, “Soaring with Fidel,” where he discovers the human drive to migrate is not unlike that of these hearty sea birds.

Life in Gaza

Listen
We examine the Palestinian conflict through the eyes of one family living in the Gaza Strip. Hamdullah and Wasfiyeh Hassouneh have ten children, and during the most recent outbreak of in-fighting between Palestinian factions, they find two of their sons in opposing camps. We learn how the current outbreak of violence is affecting this family with former Middle East Bureau Chief for the Boston Globe, Anne Barnard, who spent two years documenting their struggles.

Her story could be an allegory for pop stardom. After a rapid rise with songs like “I Don’t Wanna Wait” and “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?” in the late 1990s, Paula Cole dropped out of the business. Now, many people remember the voice, but little else. We hear the story from her.

We continue a conversation with Paula Cole. She talks about producing her first CD in seven years. It’s called “Courage,” and she tells the story of approaching music with a wiser, more mature voice, dealing with her daughter’s asthma, and going through a painful divorce.
